Status on Joomla 1.5

Postby julienV » Fri Feb 01, 2008 5:47 pm

As there are more and more questions about this subject, I'll try to give the current status.

First, you have to understand that Joomla is a "framework", a kind of "toolbox" for programmin. With Joomla 1.5, the "framework" has been totally rewritten, the tools are not the same, they don't have the same name, same usage, etc...
The "legacy" module provided with Joomla 1.5 installation allows to use module written with Joomla 1.0.X framework, providing an interface between the old components/modules/plugins and the new framework.
However, this doesn't work 100%, and some things that were working in the framework 1.0.X are not working with the legacy mode. It can be fixed so that it works in both though, but it is automatic, we have to track the errors in the code, and make the proper modifications.

Hence, there are 2 options to make Joomleague compatible with 1.5:
* fix the current code so that it is fully compatible with the 1.5 legacy module, keeping it as a native 1.0.X component.
* totally rewrite Joomleague with the new framework, making it a native 1.5 component.

Of course, the second way is better in the long run, but it is a lot of work. So far, it barely got started, but anyone is welcome to help... Especially if you are familiar with php, mysql, and MVC concept ;)

We will try to work on the first point though (legacy mode), so all your inputs will be appreciated. If you run into problems with 1.5 and joomleague 0.92, please activate the debug mode in joomla configuration so that you get the warnings, and the sql request, and post them with your bug reports. We'll create a 1.5 board, should be easier to monitor.

I hope it makes it a bit clearer for everyone !

Personally I think it would be for the best to work with both versions but with most focus on the new 1.5 ( total rewrite for this one )

However, programmers is lacking from what I can understand? Is there a way we can encourage more people to join? Is there a way we can recruit new people to help out with the work? Can we make it easy for people to join this development? Unfortunately I don't have programmingskills whatsoever, but I am willing to put in some time and effort ( and even money ) to help out with the community here. I believe that this component is the best component for Joomla so far and hope it can keep growing and get better and better as time passes.

So do let me/us know if there is a way we can contribute or if there is a way to lure/attract more programmers as well?

Thanks

OK hows this for a plan, everyone who wants to see Joomleague working with Joomla 1.5 say how much they are happy to put into a fund towards that, and then we hire developer who has the time to work on this on Rent A Coder or Get A Freelancer? Or even ask our resident pros to suggest a figure that would make it worth their while to take some time out from their busy schedules. I know that most developers on this site work on joomla for the love of the project, but it would be really good to get some timeline as to when we can start using this on 1.5.  I would put in Euro 50 to such a fund if we can get some others to contribute.

Cheers,

Niall

again, it depends if we are speaking of the complete 1.5 rewrite, or just the bug fixing for the current version to be be compatible with 1.5.
It's a tough call too, because obviously, if we decide to switch, we won't be maintaining 1.0.X version anymore, and i'm not sure everybody is ready to jump to 1.5 for their personnal use (other components, templates, etc...).

I don't think the 1.5 compatibility is difficult to reach, it's just a matter of tracking and fixing some bugs ;).
What we need is people to find out those bugs, and fill the report template properly, and/or even better use the issue tracker from joomlacode: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomleague/tracker/
Of course, if you can submit fixes, it's even better !

Are you talking about testing JoomLeague in legacy mode? in 1.5?

Hello guys! My name is Dmitry, I'm a programmer and a football player from Russia. I use joomleague on a website of my football club semilukifc.com but I develop a new website under Joomla 1.5 and met a problem with joomleague and compatibilty

I would like to join your development team and share an hour a day to create a native version of joomleague under 1.5

Two problems:
1. I have a little knowledge about programming in 1.0 version and I don't have any knowledge at all about 1.5 version. BUT I'm able to read the code and documentation since I know php and mysql.
2. I don't know German language. Only "arbaiten, ya-ya, ya wol her major" Hope you guys have a nice sence of humor

sure, it's alaways nice to get new motivated people onboard.

create an account at joomlacode.org and request to join the project. And maybe have a look at the basics of developping for joomla on joomla.org ;)

I have been trying to convert Joomleague to J1.5 Native, I think I've made some pretty good inroads, but I only have it on a dev site, and still a fair bit to do and I'm not too sure about workinking on SVN joomlacode.org.

Anyone interested in helping out? Things seem to have come to a bit of a halt at the moment?

Not sure if someone is working on this in parallel to a total 1.5 MVC rewrite.

Cheers,

Woodsy

It's definitely better to use the svn, for one you get the benefit of an history, and for 2 you can get other people involved !

Please, register on joomlacode, and ask to join the project. We can give you access to the developers section too so that we can discuss about the method...

I started to work on it a while ago, you can even checkout the code at this address: http://joomlacode.org/svn/joomleague/br ... league_1.5
There is not much in it, it was just to get an idea...

Just had a look, wow!

I no too confident on the new MVC system and joomla, I need to do some reading on Q&T forum, but I have been hacking away at v.92 just to get it running under J1.5 No legacy.

Do you think there is benefit in going parallel MVC and v.92 (no legacy) or just MVC?

I do have a username for joomlacode.org just need to get it reset. I have some more pressing issues in getting my site up.

Well, J!1.5 is about the MVC framework, so I didn't really consider running the current version without legacy mode...
Maybe that's interesting though, and it could be a basis to move on to the MVC model step by step (ie task by task), because spitting out a pure MVC version is quite a job !

I read the first 4 tutorials on the Joomla Dev Wiki last night.

I'm starting to know what I'm looking at.

In a local version of v.92 I have just been repleacing legacy syntax with j1.5 syntax this is what I mean when I say v.92 J1.5 Native.

My desktop at home literally blew up last night so I don't have a dev platform at the momentto check out 1.5 MVC version.

once I get back up and running I'll look into it some more.

Cheers

Beautiful ! But it will be 8 months that there isn't any nnews about it . Joomla 1.0.x won't be developped anymore in 2009 and J1.5 will be the official platform , so create a j1.5 version of joomleague is very needed !

Found this thread tomorrow, and I am also busy converting joomleague 0.92 to make it a native Joomla 1.5 component at the moment I am rewriting the Joomla frontend to a MVC and mainly the League component and not the Prediction component because I don't use the Prediction component.

So I am interested in the work of  other people who already did some conversion and maybe combine the effort.

When I install Joomla 1.5 legacy mode, then I can install Joomleague 0.93 (component) and with an sql export /import I can dump the Joomleague data form J! 1.0x into J! 1.5 legacy.

Do you think this is also possible with J! 1.5 Native ? (are the database the same)
Using Joomleague since version 0.90

Waiting now for someone to say something about if we will get a new component coming out soon.

Seems like quite a few people are working on different ends. It would be sooo great to combine the efforts here people. That would truly make it possible to again restore the greatness of this component.

Work together to make it work please. It has been another 14 days since last update. Any progress? :-)

Thanks,

Erik
